Terms of Use
Last revised:
In short: the tools are free and run on your own device. They're built with care but can't guarantee perfect results, so keep your original files and check what you download before you rely on it. Your rights under consumer law are not affected by anything here.
About these terms
These terms apply to your use of the KeepItLocally website at keepitlocally.app and the tools on it (together, "the service"). Please read them before you use the tools; if you don't agree with them, please don't use the service.
How we handle data is described separately in the Privacy policy. Open-source licences for the software the site is built on are listed on Licenses & credits.
Who runs KeepItLocally
The service is operated from Romania. In these terms, "we" and "us" mean the operator of KeepItLocally.
You can reach us at semerticariu@gmail.com or through the contact page.
What the service is
KeepItLocally offers free, general-purpose utilities: PDF tools, image conversion, OCR, text utilities, developer tools and calculators. You don't need an account and there is nothing to pay.
The tools run in your web browser. Files and text you open in a tool are processed on your device and are not uploaded to us — see the Privacy policy for exactly what does and doesn't leave your browser. Because processing happens on your device, how well a tool works also depends on your browser, its memory and your hardware.
The tools and articles are general-purpose information and software. They are not legal, financial, security, accessibility or other professional advice.
We aim to keep the site available and working, but we can't promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every file, browser or device.
Limits of file processing
File processing is technically difficult, and the same operation can succeed on one file and fail on another. Results can be incomplete, unexpected or unusable, in particular for:
- Compressing PDFs: images can lose detail, and the file is rebuilt, so digital signatures, form fields and other interactive features may not survive.
- Repairing PDFs: repair is best-effort. Some files can't be recovered, and recovered files may have missing pages, images or text, or substituted fonts.
- Encrypting PDFs: the Protect PDF tool uses 128-bit RC4 encryption (PDF revision 3), not AES-256. It stops casual access but may not meet regulatory, contractual or enterprise security requirements.
- Decrypting PDFs: Unlock PDF needs the correct password and produces a copy with no password at all.
- Converting PDFs to images, text or grayscale, images between formats, and images to PDF: quality, colours, transparency, layout, metadata and orientation can change.
- OCR (text recognition): characters, numbers and formatting can be misread. Only English is supported.
- Encoding, formatting and conversion of text and data (Base64, JSON, CSV, YAML, SQL and similar): edge cases, very large inputs and unusual formats may not be handled correctly.
- Metadata: Images to PDF removes photo metadata (such as location and camera details), and PDF Metadata's "Strip all" removes a document's descriptive metadata. Other tools don't set out to remove metadata, so check the result if it matters.
- Placing a signature on a PDF: the Sign PDF tool stamps an image of your signature. It is not a certificate-based digital signature and may not be accepted where a qualified or advanced electronic signature is required.
The tools never change or delete the file you open: they read it and give you a new file to download. The original stays as it was unless you overwrite or delete it yourself. Tools with specific limitations show a short notice next to the tool.
What we ask of you
To protect your own documents and data, please:
- keep a backup of your original files;
- don't process the only copy of an important document;
- open and check every output file before you rely on it, share it or delete the original;
- don't rely on a repaired document until you've checked it against what you expected;
- check that an encrypted document meets your own security requirements;
- proofread OCR results and conversions before using them in anything important;
- use software and processes suited to the task for legally, financially or commercially critical work (for example, qualified electronic signatures or certified archiving);
- keep your browser up to date, since the tools rely on it.
No guarantee of results
The service is free and is provided "as is" and "as available". To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we don't promise that the tools are free of errors, that their results will be accurate, complete, secure or compatible with other software, or that the service will always be available.
This does not limit any rights you have under laws that can't be excluded by contract, including consumer protection laws. If such a law gives you a guarantee or a remedy, it still applies.
Limitation of liability
What we don't exclude. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability where the law does not allow that, including liability for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, for death or personal injury, or under mandatory consumer protection or product liability rules.
What we're not responsible for. Subject to the paragraph above, and to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for:
- indirect, incidental or consequential loss or damage;
- loss of profit, revenue, business, goodwill or opportunity, or business interruption;
- loss or corruption of data or documents, including output files that are incomplete, inaccurate, corrupted or unusable;
- loss caused by relying on a result (such as converted, compressed, repaired or encrypted files, or recognised text) without checking it;
- the service, or a tool, being temporarily unavailable.
The tools run on your device and never change your original file, so following the steps in What we ask of you prevents most losses. Where we are liable, our liability is limited to the extent the law allows.
Third-party software
The tools are built on open-source software from other projects, such as Ghostscript, pdf.js, pdf-lib and Tesseract. Each component is used under its own licence, and their notices and source code links are on Licenses & credits.
Those licences govern your rights in that software. They don't change these terms or our own responsibilities to you as the operator of this website.
Acceptable use
When you use the service, please don't:
- use it for anything unlawful, or to process content you have no right to process;
- use it to infringe other people's rights, for example copyright, privacy, or the protection of a document you aren't entitled to open;
- interfere with the site or its hosting, for example by overloading it with automated requests, attacking it, or trying to get around its security measures;
- pretend to be us, or present a copy of the site as the official KeepItLocally service.
Your content and ours
Your files stay yours. We claim no rights in anything you process, and we never receive it.
The KeepItLocally name, logo, and the site's text and articles belong to us unless stated otherwise. Software components keep the licences shown on Licenses & credits.
Changes to the tools and these terms
We may add, change, update or remove tools and features, and we may suspend or end the service, for example to fix problems, keep it secure, or because a component stops being available. As the tools run in your browser and keep no account or data with us, you won't lose anything stored with us if a tool changes or is removed.
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. Changes apply to use of the service after they're published, not to anything you did before.
Governing law and your rights as a consumer
These terms are governed by Romanian law. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory rules of the country where you live, and nothing in these terms takes it away.
If you are a consumer living in the European Union, you can bring a claim in the courts of the country where you live as well as in Romania. You can also complain to a consumer protection authority (in Romania, the National Authority for Consumer Protection, ANPC).
If a court finds part of these terms invalid or unenforceable, the rest still applies.
